Color Experiment How To

Back to my Color Experiment post...have you ever wondered how photos like these are created? Some professional photographers say this look is old news, but I love it and have been curious about it for a long time. Well recently a friend and I decided to put our noses to the grindstone and figure out how to do it and as you can see, we succeeded!! So if you are curious, all you need is Adobe Photoshop Elements, a steady hand and some extra time.

Step 1: Open the photograph in Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor.
Step 2: Using the layer menu in the full edit tab choose the 'Create Adjustment Layer' button which is a half white, half black circle
Step 3: In the window that pops up, move the saturation bar the whole way to the left. This creates the black and white layer
Step 4: On the black and white layer, use the lasso tool and carefully outline the object you want to appear in color.
Step 5: Right click on the selected area and choose 'Fill Selection'
Step 6: In the drop down menu, choose 'Background Color' then click ok...this essentially cuts a whole in the black and white layer so the color layer underneath will show through.
Step 7: Tada!! Presto Chango, you now have a brand new picture!!
